A New Venue for Experiencing Computer-aided Virtual Environments

In February, 2005, the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York announced a $25 million expansion that includes the creation of a new virtual space powered by computer-aided virtual environment (CAVE) technology. Those interested in animation technology will want to explore the Museum's new venue for displaying work by digital artists.

Start planning for your future. No matter what you want to achieve in your career, International Academy of Design & Technology can help.

The virtual space, known as the VR Room, will provide a dedicated area for museum visitors to experience immersive environments that feature computer animation and 3D images created by artists. The VR Room will feature virtual experiences that engage the viewer in an alternative reality through special effects that can only be achieved through the use of CAVE technology.

What is CAVE Technology?

CAVE technology was introduced in 1992 by Professor Daniel J. Sandin of the University of Illinois in Chicago. The technology was developed primarily to aid scientists in scientific computing by providing them with a means to view data in a more interactive and immersive manner. CAVE technology is also commonly used by designers to visualize prototypes by providing them with a greater understanding of the effects a design may have on function and form.

Some artists are now getting special training in virtual technology to create environments in which one can experience sensations and images in a more interactive manner. The technology supports the use of special computer-generated effects that can simulate an experience, such as being in a tropical rainforest or the driver behind the wheel of a race car.

Training in Computer Animation

Training in computer animation can equip you with some of the fundamentals involved in creating 3D images, such as those commonly used by engineers to view a design, or those crafted by artists to create special effects in movies. Computer animation training can expose you to practical skills used in a variety of creative and artistic fields.
