3D Animationby Debbie Wilsondebbie.wilson@theanimationschooldirectory.com The Animation School Directory Columnist The game industry is one of the fastest-growing places to build your career as an artist. And with both traditional hand skills and digital know-how in hot demand, artists who want challenging, fast-paced, and fun creative work should look no further than the entertainment industry. The three main career paths within the game industry are programmer, artist, and producer. One may be right for you.. Consider Becoming A ProgrammerMost companies employ an in-house development staff of programmers. Programming positions may be hard to come by, but are a great way to get your foot in the door. Large publishing houses tend to hire entry-level programmers on a more-regular basis than other industries.Artists Find Roles in Animation FirmsArtists can be hired for a wide range of duties and responsibilities in animation. For example, you may start out as an intern artist, learning the craft from one company, then move on to a position in conception, texture, cut scene, 2D, 3D, or animation. Each of these artist positions specializes in particular areas of art and design, yet most games in production require artists from all specializations. Your task will be to find opportunities that interest you, demonstrate your talents, learn from the latest graphic tools, and stick with them. You'll find yourself in the creative role of your dreams.Produce A MasterpieceDepending upon the design company, producers can organize, schedule, manage, budget, and lead projects. The producer role could be an excellent avenue if you don't consider yourself an artist or technical person, don't possess the skill level required for programming, but still love the game industry. Many producers obtain valuable experience by becoming a "professional game tester" first. Taking a testing job can afford you great industry experience and let you rub shoulders with other producers. The game industry can be a fun and challenging career, leading to advancement and a lifetime of rewards.
